States of Matter

Here are some links we have found helpful as we have been learning about the states of matter.
  • The Solids and Liquids Module provides you with the chance to see what happens to different objects when you heat them up and cool them down.
  • Click here to see a variety of cartoon animations that help to explain solids, liquids and gases and their different properties.

Properties of different States of Matter

  • Solids: you can change the shape of a solid by twisting, cutting or squashing it. A solid can't change shape by itself. It keeps it's shape unless a force acts against it.
  • Liquids: A liquid gets it's shape from the container it is in but it doesn't change the volume. Gravity will pull a liquid to the bottom of the container.
  • Gases: A gas will spread out to fill the container. Gases do have weight.
